This applies even more so if they are screened in regions where the diegetic languages of the films are spoken and understood.
Multilingual films with plots in clearly determined linguistic settings are inevitably prone to a loss of credibility if linguistic logic is disregarded from the outset. I then draw attention to the dubbed and subtitled versions available for The Zookeeper's Wife in Polish and German, and argue that in this case neither language can truly replace the other.
To achieve this, I examine linguistic logic in movies in general, and describe a variety of "linguistic replacement" strategies with reference to additional examples and alternative solutions. The book, by Diane Ackerman, is the real-life story of Jan abiski and Antonina abiska, who ran the Warsaw Zoo during the Nazi occupation of Poland in World War II and saved the lives of 300 Jews who had escaped the Warsaw Ghetto. My paper aims to highlight the manifold relationships between film plots and the language of their narration, including the question of whether and how these can change in the course of audiovisual translation processes. The Zookeeper’s Wife is enjoying a lot of well-deserved success. Jan is angry, because the pig farm was his big excuse for sneaking into the Ghetto for supplies. This therefore represents yet another example of a film where the choice of language seems to be highly illogical and almost entirely the result of commercial factors. Antonina is baffled, because that means less meat for everyone, even the Nazis. The plot unfolds in English, whereas German and Polish, the two languages anchored diegetically in the film, are reduced to background noise. He smuggled Jews out of the Warsaw Ghetto to the zoo. He was a lieutenant in the clandestine Polish Army and a professor in Warsaw’s secret university. Abstract : The feature film The Zookeeper's Wife follows the Zabinskis, zoo directors in German-occupied Warsaw, who use the grounds of the zoo to provide shelter to Jews trying to escape the Holocaust.
